One Book, One Community - The Far Away Brothers
Join retired Placer Union Superintendent, Bart O’Brien and Sierra College and Placer High teacher, Steve Grundmeier, for a lively discussion of the 2019 selection for Auburn’s One Book One Community. This year’s reading is The Far Away Brothers: Two Young Migrants and the Making of an American Life by Lauren Markham. This is the incredible story of two youths who travel independently from El Salvador to California. The book beautifully describes the living conditions, political realities, challenges, and hardships, the boys face as they mature in their home village, journey north, and finally arrive and settle in the USA. This book is certain to increase our understanding of the complicated world of twenty-first century immigration.
In the first session, we will look at the historic pattern of immigrants to America, discuss the US relationship with the countries of Central America, and consider the first third of the book. In the second session, we will discuss the balance of the book and the significance of immigration in our region and beyond. The book is available at local bookstores, online, and as an ebook. The Auburn branch of the Placer County Library has book club sets.
